Scouting Scholarship. The VFW Scout of the Year scholarship program provides a $5,000 award to an outstanding scout who is the recipient of a Boy Scout Eagle Award, a Venture Scouting Silver Award or a Sea Scout Quartermaster Award. Our members encourage the young men of Mercer Island Boy Scout Troops 457, 624, & 647 to apply and represent Washington State in this National-level competition. Voice of Democracy. The VFW Voice of Democracyscholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that provides more than $3 million in scholarships annually. The 2010-2011 Theme - "Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?" The first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to his or her American university, college, vocational, or technical school. And, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C.,. Our members encourage the young men and women of Mercer Island High School to apply and represent Washington State in this National-level competition.

 

Patriot’s Pen. The VFW Patriot's Pen scholarship program is a youth-essay writing contest and nationwide competition for students in grades 6-8 that gives contestants an opportunity to write a 300-400 word essay expressing their views on democracy. More than 115,000 students participate in the contest annually. The first-place winner receives a $10,000 savings bond and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C.

Teacher’s Award. The VFW National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high and high school teachers. Educators who teach citizenship and promote American history and traditions are prime candidates for this award. Nearly 1,000 teachers from every state, the District of Columbia and overseas locations compete for this recognition annually. Awards include a $1,000 cash award for professional development to each of the top K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 teachers; an additional $1,000 award for each winning teacher’s school; and plaques from VFW for both winning teachers and the school’s they represent. Our members encourage fellow teachers, supervisors, parents, and school district administrators to submit nominations recognizing the efforts our school teachers.
