Open House. Members of VFW Post 5760 will host the Keewaydin Open House the first weekend in May as part of the Seattle Partners in Preservation (PiP) campaign. The Open House showcases the clubhouse as an integral part of Mercer Island social and community history; past, present, and future. Beginning Saturday, May 1st and held in concert with National Loyalty Day, veterans will open the clubhouse doors for all in the community to visit, listen to historic presentations, meet and hear local veterans' stories, and view a variety of displays sure to be a unique mix of patriotism, preservation, and pride. Highlights from the Open House include a historic perspective on the Keewaydin Clubhouse from Mercer Island Historical Society Co-President, Phil Flash. Also, we’ve asked the owner of Logan’s Hammer, Sean Meek to provide a display of methods and materials he’ll use in the hopeful renovation of the clubhouse roof and siding later this summer. We’ll also have a flag raising ceremony each morning, a membership drive and several Veterans Remember forums during which VFW members discuss wartime experiences and insights with guests. Hours for the Open House on Saturday, May 1st run from 10am -6pm; on Sunday, May 2nd from Noon - 5pm. If you’re interested in attending the Open House, reach use via webmail or phone, or follow our Facebook and Twitter updates for the latest details. We look forward to hosting you at the Keewaydin Clubhouse – a national historic landmark and home to VFW Post 5760.

Christmas Social. Word on the street confirms that the veterans of Keewaydin Clubhouse throw the best Christmas party on the island! During our December, 2009 holiday gathering, members played host to some 75 veterans, family members, civic leaders and local friends. Our catered event, spirited canteen, and festive gift exchange received rave reviews from all assembled. Last season’s event was marked by a special presentation from a faithful friend to VFW Post 5760, Ms. Judy Leithe of the Mercer Island Arts Council. Judy compiled a tremendous amount of photos, letters, and artwork from her years of organizational work on the annual Summer Celebration festival – all of it with veterans appreciation in mind. We’ve also enjoyed the best of catering from Ms. Patty Quigley the past few years. No guest has left our holiday feast hungry or disappointed in the selection of food along Patty’s buffet line. And, we continue to put earnest efforts into decorating the clubhouse inside and out. We received a lot of positive comments from neighbors and patrons alike after our hanging icicles made the clubhouse a welcome Christmas sight for all the community to enjoy. Mostly though, our Christmas Social is designed as a remembrance of those not with us each season, and of shared memories from holidays spent in Harm’s Way far from families and loved ones. As our guest list expands from year to year, perhaps we’ll be hosting you this coming holiday season at historic Keewaydin Clubhouse; Mercer Island’s Christmas season headquarters.
